Let’s Talk About Garg- *checks notes* Korea!

This was too fun to pass up. I’ve been traveling a lot this week, driving all up and down the west coast, and this makes me giggle every time I see it. Big trucks around Korea often have eyes on the back. Sometimes they’re angry eyes, sometimes they’re silly cartoon eyes, but they’re a regular sight around the country. You probably won’t see these trucks in Kdramas, and I don’t think I managed to fit one into ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A GARGOYLE but the eyes are cool. And they’re there for a really smart reason.

Notice where your eyes almost automatically when you look at this picture.

The human brain evolved to recognize faces as a survival mechanism. There’s a great paper on that HERE and the summary in simpler terms HERE.

Basically, recognizing faces is so crucial to survival that it’s safer for truck drivers to put eyes on the back.

Seeing a face wakes your brain up. For trucks doing long hauls where they often are on the road with other sleepy drivers the eyes keep other drivers alert, reducing traffic accidents. The eyes are also reflective, which makes them easier to see in the dark as well.

Some of the first eye stickers were introduced to Korea in 2020 and 94% of the drivers reported benefits from using them. Whether you put eye stickers on your car or not, make sure to get your eyes on ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A GARGOYLE and come explore Seoul with your new OTP.

Cover of All I Want For Christmas Is A Gargoyle. It is a light purple background with gray stone steps and gargoyles on either side of the steps. Sitting on the stairs is a pale-skinned woman with dark brown hair in a red dress, white shorts, and holding a red book with the Republic of Korea (South Korean) flag on it. The title is over her head and written as "All I Want For Christmas Is A Kiss" in white, with the word KISS crossed out and the word Gargoyle written in pink over it.
