Best of the Pacific Northwest – Hatcher’s Pass, Alaska

North of Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla is a pass through the Talkeetna Mountains named after prospector Robert Hatcher. During late spring and early summer this is a gorgeous place to visit and see the true grandeur of the Alaskan mountains.

Majestic mountains.

Glacier-carved valleys.

Homemade ice cream at the little shop in the valley…

It’s a great place to take a day trip. Wear your hiking shoes, bring bug spray and bear spray, and watch for moose while you drive. If you head up in late June or July bring a bucket for blackberry or fireweed picking.

The old mining town is now a museum. There is a parking lot, restrooms, and a gift shop.
Fireweed is an integral part of the Alaskan summer. The tall plants are some of the last to bloom during the year and the local lore says that when the tip of the fireweed blooms snow is only a few weeks away.
