What Did You Say About Drumlines?

Did I ever tell you I was a drummer?

Way back in the day my parents decided that music was part of a well-rounded education. As any of you who have been stuck in a car with me when my favorite song came on know… I’m tone deaf. Like, super, SUPER tone deaf.

I can’t carry a note in a bucket to save my life.

We all have our gifts. Singing just isn’t mine.

But I was still required to learn how to play an instrument. So I picked drums. It’s easy to tell when you’ve hit a wrong note on a drum because there’s no sound. You either hit the drum or you didn’t. I figured I could manage that. And I did! I was a really decent drummer and I even learned how to read music because I learned to play the marimba and xylophone. It was fun stuff.

And, it was stuff I didn’t think would come back up in casual conversation ever again. I played drums. It was fun. The end…

… except…

You know how writers are. We never truly let go of anything. Every little conversation, tiny skill, or fact someone throws out us is stuck in the Magical Toolbox Of Writing. Eventually, there’s a decent chance we’ll pull that skill out and try again.

Back in January of 2026 I was dealing with the cold, seasonal depression, and the brain lag that comes with just having released a book and not quite being able to form coherent enough sentences to write the next one. I don’t even remember what triggered the thought, but I mentioned on BlueSky that a bunch of teenage drummers with superpowers would be truly epic.

And then a friend said they’d love that.

And then we got to talking.

And then we had a plot worked out.

And then I told my agent about it.

And then I was writing a script for a graphic novel about six 8th grade drummers who accidentally get super powers.

The script is currently with my friend who wants to illustrate and … WE’LL SEE.

Publishing is a wild beast and it’s impossible to predict the market. So I make no promises. But if you find me on social media talking about Drumlines, no, it’s not because I picked up my drumsticks again. It’s because I’m writing a comic book for 13-year-old Liana to fall in love with.
